Bluegrass Songfest

We have arrived back in Denton, TX for our annual medical and see-our-friends visit to the Dallas area.

We went from Nashville to Memphis where we had a fun time visiting Graceland and Beale Street. Unfortunately I thought that digital cameras were banned in Graceland and I forgot the camera on Beale Street.

The tour of Graceland was interesting and informative. They have honed the tour down to a well-orchestrated process that includes trams between the museums and the mansion and individual automated tour guide recordings for each tourist. I was struck by the functionality of the mansion along with the decor. The mansion also houses a large number of awards given to the singer and memorabilia related to his career. In addition to the mansion we were able to tour Elvis' aircraft, a museum of his costumes, and a museum of his cars.

Beale Street was a good time in the evening. We happened to catch it on "Bikes on Beale" night. So there were several hundred motorcycles on the street where auto traffic is not permitted. We had dinner and visited a couple of the honky tonks on the street. The musicians in both Nashville and Memphis are first class.

We went from Memphis to Texarkana, TX for our final overnight stay. Luckily for us the musically oriented campground where we stayed was housing a Bluegrass "Pickin" and pot luck dinner that night. The people in the campground were very welcoming and invited us to the evenings entertainment. There were about forty people at the pot luck and at least half of them were Bluegrass musicians. After dinner they formed a circle

and jammed for a couple of hours. Truthfully, I enjoyed that music even more than the professionals in Tennessee.

We will be here in Denton for a month. In fact we will be spending the next five months in long stays with December planned in Fort Myers Beach, FL and January through March in Palm Harbor, FL.

So I will start a new journal that will not have much in the way of travel highlights but will serve as a way to keep friends and relatives updated on our activities during this winter "hibernation" until our next travel adventure starting in the spring.
