Key West is about 125 miles southwest of Homestead so there wasn’t much of a rush for an early start. However, we were up and ready to roll by 9:45; good thing, it was heavy traffic and slow going….mostly Sunday drivers and sightseers. We’re always amazed at the driver who’s chugging along 15-20 miles under the speed limit, completely oblivious to the world, with nary a glance in the rearview mirror to witness the 5 miles of traffic backed up behind him/her. It must be nice to be so clueless. However, in defense of the sightseers, we can’t blame them for gawking; these waters are as pretty as anything we ever saw in the Caribbean.
We arrived at our home for the next week at Boyd’s Campground about 5 miles from Key West. We expected real estate to be tight around here but these sites are so narrow, with palm trees and concrete pads positioned in such a way, that we couldn’t fit in just any site. They assigned us a site; well, we could back into it, but we wouldn’t be able to get the main slide out. I took Foxy for a walk and Joe went to the office to see if we could get re-assigned to another site. The alternate was a little easier to back into but Joe had to make another trip to the office to get someone to trim the tree branches so we could back in far enough to get off the road and get our bedroom slide out. All of this hassle wouldn’t have been so bad except it costs a small fortune to stay here for a week. We were expecting a nice site, just back in, get set up, and have lunch. This campground came highly recommended but it's one of the worst we've ever been in. Maybe our expectations are too high. Well, anyway we’re finally settled in. Foxy dragged us to the water and she took several big gulps….ah, nice cold water.
It’s Super Bowl Sunday so there are lots of parties going on. The guy across from us is playing his radio loud enough to be heard in Cuba…….yes, we’re actually closer to Cuba than Miami now.
Our campground brochure has lots of advertising for seafood restaurants so Joe will be in his element around here; however, tonight we’re going to stay in, relax, and have some leftovers……tomorrow, we sightsee.
