We had an easy drive today, about 135 miles, from south of Portland, ME to Foxboro on the south side of Boston. We specifically planned to drive on Sunday in hopes of finding lighter and more sane traffic on I-95. We waited until check-out time to depart because our new campground stated check-in was 3 p.m.....way too late for us to be on the road normally. Our trek through Maine was on turnpike and the toll wasn't too bad. Then a short stretch through New Hampshire brought us to Massachusetts, the Bay State.
We stopped at the Visitor Center for lunch and a walk for Foxy. I picked up a couple of tourist brochures for a couple of things we might do once we head west out of Boston. We were acutely reminded of how scarce real estate is in these parts...a few tiny spaces had to accommodate the RV's, trucks, and autos in for a rest stop. We were lucky to get a short pull-through spot and Joe squeezed us in; we didn't delay and, once we had consumed a quick sandwich, we were on our way south. Traffic was heavy although everyone was behaving. Massachusetts drivers are notorious for their erratic, aggressive driving habits. We know; we used to be Mass. drivers when we lived and worked here. Use of the breakdown lane is allowed during certain peak hours and I must say it's a bit of a surprise when someone comes whizzing up on the right-hand side doing about 70 in the breakdown lane. God help the poor guy with a flat tire or a mechanical breakdown.
We arrived at our home for the next week, Normandy Farms Campground. Joe had to be really careful on Route 1 because the traffic was reduced to one lane southbound and in one spot, it was a choice of taking off our passenger side mirror on a pole, or knocking down a couple of orange cones; needless to say, Joe took out the cones. The Irish rock group, U2, are in town and they were preparing the lanes to accommodate all the traffic expected for the concert both tonight and tomorrow nights.
After we settled in, we had dinner at home and took Foxy for a walk to check out our new surroundings. They have a leash-free doggie park, aptly named The Freedom Tail, and Foxy really loves to tear around in there off leash.
