Sojourn to the Southeast travel blog

Moving day again! We drove a little longer distance than we’ve been doing recently; but, just 135 miles southeast brought us to Homestead, a little south of Miami, and our home for the next week at Goldcoaster RV Park. It was a fairly easy drive; we opted for US 41 and most of it was over fairly remote area skirting the northern boundary of Everglades National Park.

We stopped at Miccosukee Indian Village for our lunch break. This is a little touristy area offering airboat rides, alligator shows, and a gift shop; but, they had a huge empty parking lot so we zipped in for our lunch break. Traffic was a little heavier as we approached Homestead. We decided to top off our fuel even though we needed only 45 gallons; $2.38 / gallon is the going rate around here for diesel; hard to believe we think that’s reasonable. I looked back over my fuel records and the last time we bought diesel this ‘cheap’ was in Mexico.

Homestead honestly earns its name as the agricultural basket of Florida. We passed one fruit stand after another on both sides of the road (some offered u-pick services too), flowers and plant nurseries were just as numerous, and every field was cultivated with various vegetables. I can’t wait to pick up some of this fresh produce.

We reached the park and it’s one of those gated communities with a 24-hour guard shack. We get the impression they have more permanent residents than transients; but, it looks nice so we’ll be fine for a week. The guard assigned us a site; we got parked and it’s satellite friendly. Foxy already hauled Joe for a walk to check out the new neighborhood.

Joe got the sun shades up and tidied everything up outside and then he watched some car racing while I piddled around with nothing specific going on. We’ll do some local sightseeing tomorrow….until then…..stay tuned!!
