Indiana Dunes State Park is a special place for us. It was Sue’s most favorite place during our time living in the Chicago suburbs. I enjoy the Dunes as one of the unique ecological environments in the United States.

The most obvious draws of the Dunes are the sand dunes and Lake Michigan.

The Big Blowout

There are a number of hiking trails in the woods, on the dunes, and across the lakefront. As one stands on top of a dune the view to the northwest is sand, grass and water.

But a simple 180 degree turn has one looking over the green forest that lies behind the dunes to the southeast.

It is the contrast of these two ecologies that makes a hike in the dunes a fascinating experience and one that differs dramatically from day to day.

On a clear day (this one was mildly hazy) you can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake.

Indiana Dunes National Preserve and Indiana Dunes State Park are the result of the work of environmentalists in the 1930s. There efforts have preserved this area in the midst of much industry that borders the lake. To the southeast along the lakefront lie the steel plants of Gary, IN.

To the northwest is the atomic energy plant at Michigan City, IN.

But the Dunes remains free and protected.

We spent four nights here and will now move on to Cleveland.
