Grand Marais is an artist town and along with the North Shore a tourist hot spot in the summer. There are resorts all up and down SR 61. There are lots of wayside rest stops, hiking trails and state parks. It is easier to get opera and concert tickets in this area than it is to get camping spots in the state parks. They all seem to fill up 90 days in advance.

Lake Superior is way to cold (about 40 degrees) to swim in but boating in the area is big. This is also the main artery into Ontario, Canada and part of the Lake Superior Circle Drive. SR 61 is also the North Shore Scenic Drive from Duluth to Grand Portage.
