Soldiers barracks, Fort Sisseton, South Dakota

Officer's quarters, Fort Sisseton, South Dakota

Commanding officiers office, Fort Sisseton, South Dakota

6/19 – 6/23

It took us four days to travel 609 miles to Webster, South Dakota. The first day we traveled on SR42, SR57, I-43, US41 and US10 before arriving at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Plover, Wisconsin. As we left Door County we stopped at Renard’s Cheese to stock up on local Wisconsin cheese ($37 worth). The next day we drove to another Wal-Mart lot in Hastings, Minnesota following US10. Following US52, I-494 and US12 we arrived in Danvers, Minnesota and stayed at a beautiful little picnic area by a small river. On the forth day we continued on US12 arriving at a small Chamber of Commerce campground in Webster. While in Webster we visited Fort Sisseton. This fort was used between 1864 and 1889 to protect settlers against the Indians. The fort is in excellent shape because most of the buildings were made from local stones and bricks. The state ranger gave us an excellent tour which included the enlisted soldiers barracks, magazine, officer quarters, quartermaster’s office, guard house, surgeon’s home, commander’s home and the hospital.
