We had another fairly easy drive today with just a little excitement thrown in to keep us on our toes. After turning off I-20 at Jackson, MS, we headed south on U.S. 49. We like to get off the Interstate highways and travel the secondary roads; but, there are some disadvantages to that strategy. There usually aren’t many rest areas but we generally find a grocery store or other shopping center parking lot to whip into for a quick break for Joe and a walk for Foxy. So, when we spied a Super Wal-Mart, we turned off…..but, just as Joe was making the turn, he saw the cross pole with the dreaded words “Low Clearance”. It was left to ourselves to figure out how low as there was no height measurement displayed.
Joe put on the brakes and pulled over. I was sizing up the height of the cross bar and thought we could make it; but, Joe said he didn’t think so. Being that Joe has by far the better eyesight of the two of us, I wasn’t going to argue that point and acquiesced pretty fast to the plan to disconnect the car and back up. Luckily, the area around us was wide enough that the other traffic was able to maneuver around us. From lots of experience, we also have disconnecting the car down to a science. While I backed up the Jeep, Joe backed up the motor home and we drove separately to the nearest spot where we could pull off, which was about a quarter of a mile away. We took a break and I took Foxy for a walk while Joe hooked up the Jeep again and we were on our way. That Wal-Mart lost out on some business today: I was going to pick up a few things while we were there.
Highway 49 would take us south to I-10 at Gulfport. It’s not a terribly bad road but, when we did hit the bad patches, it was dreadfully awful. We topped off our diesel again in Gulfport even though we needed only about 45 gallons. Now, we won’t have to feed any diesel to “The Cat” until we get to Seffner, FL on November 5th. The price in Gulfport was $3.41; it’s at least $0.20 / gallon more expensive in Florida.
I was craving breakfast food so we had lunch at Flying J. They make a pretty good omelet, and we watched the political news and the financial market meltdown on Fox News. In the meantime, Foxy was enjoying a much needed nap in the motor home with the generator running and the air-conditioner set on high. The temperature is in the low 90’s accompanied by some pretty high humidity.
We stopped for the day just a little west of Mobile in Theodore at I-10 Kampground. We booked in for two nights so we will have a rest day tomorrow. After being on the road for three days, we can use a ‘down’ day to rest and catch up on laundry and other chores.
We’re still working off some leftovers for supper and the last presidential debate is on tap for TV watching tonight.
So, that’s all the news for today, tune in again tomorrow.
