It’s still hot in Vancouver. Today we decided to get out of town and head for the mountain. Jeff and I visited Johnson Ridge a few years ago. It is the ridge where an observer, Johnson, radioed the beginning of the eruption and then died as the ridge was enveloped. Today there is an information center and observation area at the site.
We took Arnie with us in the hope that he would be able to find cooler weather and some hiking space. But, when we got to the Ridge we found severe restrictions on where dogs could walk and the temperatures were in the 80s. So we decided to have Sue visit the Center while Arnie and I walked around the parking lot. Since I had visited the Center before, this arrangement worked out OK.
Mount St. Helens is still one of the more awesome attractions in the United States. The massive devastation is not as easy to see today as it was 10 or 20 years ago, but the effect of the eruption is still obvious. Sue took some pictures from the Center and we stopped a couple of times along the road to capture views of the mountain and the lava flow from the eruption.
We stopped for lunch at Clear Lake not too far from Johnson Ridge. Restrictions on pets and the heat prevented us from taking Arnie for a walk here as well. We got back to the See Ya to find 105 degree temperatures in Vancouver.
We need to try something else to escape this heat!
