We got a very early start, at least for me, for our journey south. The first stop was to top off our diesel at Flying J, $3.399 / gallon. Then we were on the road and headed south before 8:30 a.m. (wow, that IS early). It was dry and, of course, the wind was blowing out of the south; that’s not a good omen for fuel mileage. We ran into some showers around Ardmore but it didn’t amount to anymore than enough to mess up the Jeep and we drove out of it quickly.
We had our lunch break at the Texas Visitor Center and Joe took Foxy for a long walk. I took a couple of pictures but the lighting was not conducive to good photos.
We both hate the LBJ Freeway around Dallas; so we turned off at Gainesville and took Highways 82 and 69, which brought us southeast to I-20 around Kilgore. However, we don’t recall these highways being as rough and bumpy as they were today. They were doing quite a bit of patching and reconstruction but we were glad when we saw I-20.
We had an uneventful driving day; 327 miles brought us to our home for the night a little south of Gladewater, TX at Shallow Creek RV Park. We’ve stayed at this RV Park before so we knew where we were going (we thought). It has separate entrance and exit driveways and Joe was just starting to swing wide to make our turn into the entrance when we spotted the cones; yes, the entrance driveway was closed for patching. This forced us into a U-turn, not an easy feat with a 60-foot rig on a narrow two-lane country road, and little or no ability to back up because of a car in tow. But, we made it and entered through the exit driveway. We ‘suggested’ to the office staff that a sign would have been helpful.
This is a beautiful, clean park and Foxy enjoyed some time outside while we set up utilities, etc. Joe took her for another long walk while I made dinner. We’re in for a relaxing evening and we’ll hit the road again tomorrow…..goal = Vicksburg, MS.
