5/25 - 5/31
Joanne went for her first post surgery doctor visit and found out that she should stay off her feet for at least a month. So instead of starting our journey east, Ken drove back to Elk where we could help Joanne while she is laid up.
In May we put 1046 miles on the house and 925 miles on the Jeep.
6/1 - 6/27
Continuing our stay in Elk:
>Joan spent most of her time with Joanne at the Boys and Girls Club where Joanne works. Joan became the Art Coordinator and helped establish an art program there. Her main project was organizing an art show for the Orange County Choppers event that will be held in July.
>Ken spent most of his time doing odd jobs around our house.
>Ken took the house to an RV service place to get the water pump replaced.
>we went to the Elk Pioneer Days breakfast and parade. They have a great parade for a five-building town (post office, store, Elks lodge, newspaper office and church).
>Chad went on an adventure to climb Mt. Rainer. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperative and his party did not make it past the Camp Muir staging area. He still enjoyed his climb.
>on Father's day Joanne and Chad took us to the Marrakesh Moroccan Restaurant (2008 N.W. Blvd., Spokane, WA 509-328-9733). It was a real adventure and a four star restaurant. When we entered the restaurant it was so dark you could hardly see. They brought us to a table that was only about two feet off the ground. Chad sat on the floor, Joanne sat on a pillow and the old folks sat on a very low bench. Before eating the waiter brought a large bowl and pitcher and poured water over our hands so we could "clean up". The first course was a delicious lentil soup which we drank from the bowl. The next course was a salad which was similar to Mexican salsa. We ate the salad by scooping a mouthful using a piece of Moroccan bread. None of use were very good at this task, but we managed. Next came an appetizer which was shredded chicken with cinnamon in a light pastry, this was eaten directly with our hands. The main courses we tried were: Lamb M'Rouzia (lamb with onions, raisins and honey sauce), Brochette Marrakesh (grilled, marinated tenderloin of leg of lamb), BBQ chicken and Braised Chicken (chicken in a cumin and paprika sauce). All of the meals were delicious as well as the dessert (a sticky, sweet thing).
>we went to the three-on-three hoops tournament in Spokane. This is the largest 3 man team basketball tournament held in the world. Someone told us there were over 6100 teams competing. Many of the Spokane streets were closed off and there were hundreds of basketball courts set up.
