Since we were already a bit off our US50 route, we decided to continue the detour and go see Capitol Reef National Park. In only 137 miles we were at Torrey, Utah and the Thousand Lakes RV Park.
Capitol Reef National park encompasses the Waterpocket Fold. This wrinkle in the earth's crust is about 100 miles long and consists of numerous cliffs and gorges. The colors range from purples and reds to whites. It is really a beautiful place. We hiked in two gorges: Capitol Gorge and the Grand Wash. Both were spectacular. We also viewed the park from the overlooks and a very exciting 14 mile 4-wheel trail through creeks and over mountain passes.
We also had some time to visit and jam with our friends Galen and Karen Ballentine (Galen plays the guitar and Karen plays the mountain dulcimer) who, by some twist of fate, were hosts at Thousand Lakes RV Park. Karen and Galen took us to the Sunglow restaurant and introduced us to pinto bean pie. No, pinto bean pie is not a casserole dish - it truly is a pie and is eaten for dessert. The ingredients include pinto beans along with coconut. These are mixed into a custard-like filling and placed in a traditional crust with a crumb top. Very good.
