Yesterday we decided to take a side trip (about a two hour drive) to Tepic, the capital of the state of Nayarit. We thought the trip would be fun and would give us a chance to look at a potential route home later in the See Ya. So, we proceeded north on route 200 and began to wind our way into the mountains through tobacco and sugar cane farmlands.

The trip was slow going whenever we found ourselves behind a large truck. Later in the drive we were behind one of the many sugar cane haulers.

We eventually arrived at Tepic and found ourselves in the midst of a thriving city of more than 300,000 residents.

We spent some time in a semi-lost (I never think I'm totally lost) mode driving up and down Insurgencia Avenue looking for a Wal Mart that we knew was somewhere on that street. We eventually found a Soriana, had lunch, and then visited Wal Mart.

It was already 3:00 by the time we parked the Honda and began strolling through the streets of central Tepic.

We soon centered most of our interest on the Central Square, Cathedral, and Governor's Palace.

The 18th century cathedral is located across from the Central Square.

Tepic Cathedral
Much of the interior has been renovated and was very impressive.

There were a good number of worshipers there praying at various altars and relics.

We headed east from the cathedral for about a half dozen blocks and arrived at the former Governor's Palace.

The current uses of this full square block structure seemed varied and its overall current purpose not clearly defined. Still there were some very bright murals on the walls and ceilings of the interior

and it was an interesting building.

All-in-all we all found the Tepic visit interesting and educational. It was worth the drive.

It was 4:30 by the time we got the Honda headed back toward lo de Marcos and that meant that we just made it back a little past sundown.
