Sojourn to the Southeast travel blog

Our last leg of the journey to Gaffney was an easy 215 miles, all on interstate highway. Traffic was light except through Columbia and Spartanburg. Spring is in the air here and the trees are starting to bud out nicely. The weather was beautiful bright and sunny and we’re enjoying every moment of it as it’s coming to an end in a day or two with a cold, wet front heading this way.

We fueled up at Flying J in Columbia. Diesel was $1.759; we have to go way back to January of ’05 in Orange, TX to find the last time we paid this price or lower for diesel. Occasionally, we like to have lunch at Flying J and we did that today. So, we had a nice break for lunch and took Foxy for a walk; although I don’t like to get her out at Flying J very much because it tends to be very dirty around the diesel pumps.

We see strange things on the road sometimes. We stopped at a rest area before Spartanburg and a couple was walking a baby goat on a leash. The goat was bleating big time and Foxy was really curious about what it was, or what they were doing to it to make it sound so unhappy. We coaxed her away and into the coach and we were on our way again.

We’ve also climbed a bit from sea level and the change in elevation requires adjusting the air in the mattress. We are spending the night at Pinecone Campground just a little south of the Freightliner Service Plant. We’ll dry camp there tomorrow night since our appointment is at 7:45 a.m. the next morning.

We went to dinner at Fatz Restaurant. We had eaten there the last time we were in Gaffney and the food was just as good, but it was very quiet with not a lot of patrons. South Carolina has been hit hard with unemployment and it is likely taking its toll on the restaurants.
