It was 134 miles to the Wal-Mart parking lot in Hutchinson, Kansas. Our friend Loyal McCammond told us that we had to stop at Hood's Haven on the way - so we did. Hood's Haven is located on the town square in St. John, Kansas. Mr. Hood was a science, physics and math teacher in St. John until his retirement. But he never really retired, instead he purchased this building and set up all his high school science projects for people to enjoy. For two hours Mr. Hood (age 84) gave us demos of all his experiments, we had a great time. Do not miss this stop if you are in the area.
Hutchinson has an excellent museum called the Cosmosphere and Space Center. This museum covers the history of rockets from the German V1 and V2 World War II rockets to the US putting men on the moon. They do a really great job describing the race to space and the have more artifacts (space suits, rockets, space capsules, etc.) than any museum other than the Washington DC Air and Space Museum. To tell the truth, both of us enjoyed this museum more than the one in DC.
Food is great in Hutchinson, especially if you eat at the 4 star Carriage Crossing (Yoder Road, Yoder, Kansas 620-465-3612). We had some excellent smoked sausage. Don't miss their cherry-cheese pie. The sausage was so good that we went across the street to the Yoder Meat Market and purchased a bunch.
