The last two days have been lazy days. We didn’t even get out of bed until almost 8:00. That is almost unheard of to Bill and I but Jan came from California and it was just 7:00 by her internal clock. Lazed around with our coffee and taking turns in the shower until after 10:00 before we were ready to head out anywhere.Yesterday we chose to go to the historic towns of Black Hawk and Central City. “The Old West History Meets the New West Fun”. That is the caption on the brochures from these two quaint mountain towns. Just one word – GOLD- turned a secluded mountain canyon into a bustling empire of opportunity. Today that same gulch of riches shines bright as the old west history meets the fun. Boasting both a raucous past and a Victorian grace, Blackhawk and Central City thrive as the picturesque foothills carry a vibrant legacy of risks and rewards. The risk was once gold and now it is the 37 casinos that line the streets of these two cities. The buildings are awesome to see and even if you are not a gambler, there is much to see and do. We had a great day there. Have you ever had lunch in a bordello? Well we hadn’t either but that is just what we did this time. Our waitress that took such good care of us told us she had never worked in one either. LOL. Quite a neat place and the food outstanding. We went from one town to the other and checked out many of the casinos. Next week there will be tons of things going on in town but like so many places nothing happens until Memorial Day weekend. One of the things that I wish we could be here for is the Brass Bed Races. Doesn’t that sound like fun? There is a Cemetery Crawl the last weekend of August also. Wouldn’t you love to participate in that? We had driven to Central on I-70 but our return trip we took the scenic route down Hwy 119 to US-6. It followed the mountain on the opposite side that we took to Estes Park the day before. It was beautiful.Today we were just as lazy in the morning and it was almost 11:00 before we headed out to an area we had wanted to see….. Cherry Creek is a beautiful area in Denver with some of the cities best old homes anywhere. I could only compare it to Highland Park in St Paul as for the stately homes. We had read about the great shopping mall and upscale shops and restaurants but found it not quite up to our liking. The first thing that turned us off is when we turned into the mall and started to go up the parking ramp. We were concerned right off the bat because it looked so low but the signs said no left turn so we had no choice but to turn right; right up the ramp that brushed top of our truck and now we have to buff the scratches out. We had to continue for quite awhile before we could escape. What a bummer. Don’t you think they would have had a sign or something? The mall was a good one if you shop Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Ave. and Nordstrom’s and as much as I love these stores, it is not what a fulltime RV’er wears everyday. Course we had fun looking at all the new Couch purses and Louie Vittan luggage but the only purchase I made was at the Williams-Sonoma store. Let’s face it….. Living by the Mall of America has spoiled me dearly and I enjoy the little specialty shops so much more. Once we left the mall, we walked down the street and tried to find an outdoor restaurant to eat at. The first one we spotted that had a crowd outside was Cherry Cricket but we thought we should look around. Big mistake, after another ½ hr of walking we finally asked someone where to eat and they said to be sure to go to Cherry Cricket.... Good choice…. It sells t-shirts that advertise themselves as the “Black Sheep of Cherry Creek”. We had some fantastic hamburgers and then made our way back home… We had almost reached it when I plugged my favorite clothing store into the GPS and found we were only two miles from Christopher and Banks. I have been shopping there for at least forty years and it is still on the top of my list. In fact when I started there it was called Braun’s. I think that was their first name but there might have been a name before that. If anyone remembers the name back in 1970 please give me a reminder. Jan also loves to shop at this store because they don’t have one in her area of California and not everyone has the same clothes. It is another one of the great businesses that started in Minnesota that I love. Target, Best Buy, 3M, Barnes and Noble and Betty Crocker are way at the top in my list also.We were very successful at this shop and both came out with huge shopping bags…. Poor Bill, he patiently sat in the truck and waited for us. He is such a great guy.I just finished making dinner at home for our last night in Denver. We had hoped to meet up with our friends Laura and Rich again but both of our schedules were so busy it just wasn’t to be. So sorry Laura. We had such a great time in your beautiful City and I sure know why you settled here. Tomorrow we pack up and take Jan to the airport and continue on our way north a bit so catch up with our scheduled washing machine fix on Tuesday…. Later……
