Tomorrow will be a very special day for me. My Sister Jan will be flying in for a few days to join us in the Denver area. I really wanted to wait for her to share our day in Breckenridge but after watching the weather forecast we knew that today was going to be the best time for us to go there. We have been to several ski resorts in the Denver area but never Breckenridge/Keystone area. A couple of years ago my step-daughter Sherylbought a Condo in this area. We never had the opportunity to visit them while they were here but thanks to Sheryl giving us the lock box # we were able to see where they spend their vacation. Sher is the one that we visited in Dallas when we left Florida this year and her two children are Adam and Sydney. Adam is a professional photographer and has taken so many beautiful pictures from here that I was chomping to take my own photos. We started out early by our standards (8:30) and headed west on I-70. This is some of the most beautiful Interstate that you will ever find. As you climb up to 9000ft plus you go through a lot of mining country… Some mines are closed but there are still a lot that are active. We made our first stop at the town of Idaho Springs. There are several mines in this town and more importantly, a Starbucks Coffee House… Once fortified with our caffeine fix we drove to the biggest mine that is a big tourist attraction. You can tour the mine and pan for gold. We didn’t do either today. I guess after panning for gold in the Yukon nothing else can be quite so exciting… Sorry we are so spoiled. Our next stop was at Georgetown. This has a great visitors center and a viewing point for the Colorado Mountain Goats. We heard that the goats were coming down in masses but try as we could, we did not see a sign of them. I guess we couldn’t blame them. This viewing area is at the base of three mountains and the wind in the spring and fall is horrendous. It had to be blowing least 50mph while we were there. Every turn of the road had a view that capped the previous one and I soon gave up and just clicked the camera over and over. This is the very first time that I was afraid of not having a big enough card in my camera….. 4gig is over 1000 pictures and I was concerned about running out. You know what I was doing most of the day. With all of the pictures we took I will not be able to tell you about all of them but when I think you will be interested I will let you know. I just have to let you know that the temps in Denver were in the upper 80’s today and the Breckenridge area was in the 60’s. That won’t happen again for a long time and we are so glad we had the opportunity to enjoy it. The only down side was that this is considered Mud Season in the mountains….. They ski all winter, close the end of April and take a couple of weeks off before the tourist season begins…. Thankfully, we did find several place still open and had a great day. One of the best….. Sorry Sis, We'll do some great things when you get here so don't be too dissapointed.
