We escaped the many storms which raged through parts of Kansas last night and the morning dawned with dull, cloudy skies and a damp, misty feeling permeated the air. We got on the road early and we welcomed the 20 degree difference in temperature; low 70's vs. low 90's. Yesterday, we ran the generator and the house air to supplement the dash air. Today, we didn't turn on the dash air until our first break. The wind was not as severe either so we got much better fuel mileage, about 7.4 mpg.
As we rolled along the quiet Kansas roads, we got to see a slice of rural America. Fields of wheat, large cattle feed lots, cattle hauling trucks, and miles of crop irrigation equipment dominated the scenery and it seemed we were never far from a railroad track.
We rolled on through the high plains of Kansas, crossed into Colorado, and the sun broke through the clouds. Mountain time bought us an hour in time difference and we stopped for lunch. We took Foxy for a nice long walk; we all enjoyed the nice brisk air.
Before long we arrived in Limon, our destination for the night. Limon is a town rich in railroad history and got its name from a crew boss, John Limon. The railyards are still in use and there is a trail which was paved in the 1800's by gold prospectors carving out a route to the Rockies.
In addition to resetting all the clocks, the first thing we had to do was adjust the air mattress to compensate for the increased elevation; we're at roughly 5400 feet here. We hope to make it to Loveland tomorrow, our base for exploring the Front Range region.
