Close up of the hospital

We couldn't go inside

We left the historic town of Las Vegas, New Mexico about 8:30 this morning. Bill had a sore throat last night and we just stayed inside. He was in bed by 8:30. When he got up this morning we debated about leaving but since it was only about 118 miles to an area we wanted to spend a few days in, he decided to head out……. About 40 miles out of Las Vegas we found a turn off for the Fort Union National Landmark….. Wow, a National something that we haven’t seen before.

Most of you know that we have always followed National Parks, Landmarks, and Trails. There are several in New Mexico but so far any that we were near we have already been there, done that. Some of our favorites have been Carlsbad Caverns, Pecos, Pictograph (right in Albuquerque) and Bandolier. I know we saw many more but over the years but Fort Union was a new one. It was only miles off I-25 but this is also the first time we have stuck to the Interstates so maybe that is why we missed it before.

Fort Union - ---- When New Mexico became United States Territory after the Mexican War, the US moved their garrisons to post closer to the Indians near the Mountain and branches of the Santa Fe Trail. Three different forts were built before they got it right and today they have preserved some of the location for us to enjoy. Fort Union is right in the middle of the Santa Fe Trail and also part of a Civil War Battlefield. It was a major supply area for all arsenal along the trail as well as one of the most bustling trade centers with a State of the Art Hospital. Today we toured the remains of this area. History is sure in this area. Where else can you follow the Mexican War, Santa Fe Trail and Civil war? It was hard to do this when I knew how awful Bill was feeling but he wanted to see it as much as I, so we went for it.

We arrived at Raton, an area just south of the Colorado boarder and a place we wanted to spend a couple of days, around 1:00. It was lunch time at the office but a worker took us to our site and told us to register later. We parked, hooked up electric and Bill went to bed. Poor guy. He was feeling awful. While he slept, I made homemade chicken noodle soup and when he finally woke up about 4:00 he ate ½ bowl and hit the couch. It looks and feels like the fever he had has broken but it is now 7:30 and he is still sleeping. Let’s hope things look better tomorrow.

Later........

PS.... He wants more soup.......Yippee
