Lake Tahoe is a beautiful lake. Since we are mostly resting for Sunday's races, we decided to drive the 72-mile route around the lake today.

We started by heading east on highway 50 back through State Line (a casino alley) and back toward Carson City. We passed through the tunnels that have been built through Cave Rock. About a half mile up the road we stopped at a viewpoint that gave us a great view of the lake looking to the north and Cave Rock to our east.

We then continued east on 50 and turned north on route 28 that follows the lakes east coast. This coast is the least populated coast of the lake with several small state parks and beaches and only a few residences. The view across the lake of the western shore was very nice.

As we reached the north coast we reached Incline Village, the first of a series of small towns along the coast that include tourist spots and casinos (in Nevada). Eventually we crossed the line back into California and reached the intersection with route 89 at Tahoe City where the marathon will start on Sunday.

We headed south on 89 and 15 miles later were driving up the marathon's "hill from hell" that climbs five hundred feet to reach Emerald Bay State Park, the most photographed spot on the lake. We then drove another half mile to Inspiration Point for some more great vistas.

From Inspiration Point we descended rapidly along the highway that has a commanding view of the lake and its south shore. When we reached the intersection with route 50 we were back at the campground.

It is indeed a beautiful lake and should make for a great run on Sunday!
