Yesterday we were lucky to get another gloriously sunny day for our last look at the Pacific for awhile. After kissing Kissing Rock goodbye we drove the coast from Gold Beach to the California line and beyond to almost Crescent City. If you ever have a few weeks or months and want a great drive, bike or hike, start in Hermiston, OR and follow the Columbia River Gorge (I-84 and higway 30) to Astoria, OR and then go south on 101 to the California Line. Take lots of time, the scenery is fabulous!
When we turned east on highway 99 the world changed. We were suddenly, if briefly, in the world of the redwoods. We weaved the See Ya along the highway where the giant trees often abut the road. The highway crosses the coastal mountains and connects with Interstate 5 at Grants Pass where we spent the night.
Today we headed further inland and climbed to 5000 feet and the very different high desert country of eastern Oregon. We had our GPS set for Junipers Reservoir RV Resort, our destination campground, as we drove along highway 140 toward the town of Lakeview. About 20 miles from our GPS arrival point a large sign loomed that said, “Junipers Reservoir RV Resort.”
I puzzled over this just long enough to drive past the entrance before realizing that the GPS locator was 20 miles off! A couple of miles down the road we found a spot where we could unhook the Escape, back the See Ya onto a side road and get turned around to head back to the entrance. I have relearned the lesson to never trust GPS!
The RV Park is located up a long dirt road on a ranch and is very quiet!
