May 28 - Lands End at the tip of Gaspe Peninsula
Today we did the main drive around the north shore of the Gaspe Peninsula from Sainte-Anne-des-Mont to 20 kms before Perce. We had a thin, high overcast cloud with the sun shining through at times and we could see to the horizon, so it was a perfect day for cruising the peninsula. There are little villages every 10 kms along the way. Nice spots to stop for lunch or grab a coffee at the café, as we did. The scenery is beautiful, with high hills on one side that are being eroded by the sea on the other. For the most part, the road were great. Black top was smooth and there weren't too many hills. For about 20 kms between Grand Vallee to L'Anse-a-Valleau, the roads were very rough, at least for the motorhome. There are also numerous hills with 10-12% grades, we saw one short hill with a 14% grade, but nothing we couldn't handle. It was Sunday morning, so the traffic was very light and we weren't holding anyone up.
At Riviere-au-Renard you can take a shortcut across the point instead of going around Forillon National Park. You are then in the town of Gaspe. Looks like a wonder place to spend a summer vacation. A nice harbour, Jacque Cartier museum (since he landed here in 1535 and claimed Canada for France), shops, restaurants and all the other amenities you would want for a nice stay.
We then traveled on another 20 miles to our destination at Saint-Georges-de-Malbaie, the campground of Tete L'Indien. A beautiful little campground in a bay, facing north with a view of the tip of Forillon National Park. As you can see in the picture, there is a hugh rock that broke away from the cliff face and is the perfect profile of an Indian head. The owner of the campground, Dan, is a retired school teacher from Missouri who retired to a cottage here and decided to build a campground as there was a large demand for people wanting to see the Indian head. Dan was full of great information on what to do in the area. It's going to be hard to pack it all in, in 2 days.
The weather is fantastic for this time of year, possibly anytime of the year. I think we hit 20C yesterday and there was no wind. If there was a breeze off the water it would cool things down significantly.
