August 13/06 We got up early to catch ferry for 9:00 tour but there was not one at 8:30 so had to drive around to the bridge to make it in time for the tour. We found the tour quite helpful most of the displays are in French only and we are not at all proficient in French. The 1st tour we took was 2 hours through Vieux Quebec followed by a 4 hour countryside tour for taking in Ile de Orleans, Montmorency Falls and Ste. Anne de Beaupre. We had a 2 ½ hr break in between to visit the town. Since we did that last night we went to the local farmer's market. It is a large one with good prices.
Then we visited the Camp of General Wolfe, where he staged his attack on Quebec city in September 1759, we also walked the plains of Abraham where the final battle was fought between the British and French, amongst other sites we saw the oldest house in Courville, oldest church in Quebec - Notre Dame de Victorios 1688, Cyclorama de Jerusalem, a Memorial Chapel - souvenir de la Troisieme Eglise Batie en 1676 and Scala Santas 1891. A picture of us in front of St Anne de Beaupre. We talk about government inefficiency. Quebec seems to take the cake! There is a highway in Quebec city that was started 30 years ago that ends at a cliff. No one seems to know where it was supposed to go? It is said they say it may get done in 2008 for the 400th anniversary of Quebec. Our tour guide told us that he figured the reason the roads were so rough is they are in Braille for the blind.
We tried poutine today, it is extremely popular in Quebec. We don't see what the big deal is with it. It seemed fairly greasy and not very good.
August 14/06 Leaving Levis at 9:30 am. The scenery all along the St. Lawerence river is mostly farming. They are changing from dairy farming to market farming and many sell their products directly to retail, cutting out the middle man. A dairy quota costs as much as $37,000 a cow. Young families can't afford to buy parents out so they are selling off their quota to the large dairies and converting the farms. Driving along the St. Lawrence River today and it is windy, cool and raining. We stopped at a rest spot just before Riviere du Loup and met a couple from Surrey with a Cardinal 5th wheel. They are on a 1 year trip. We decided to meet at Camping Amqui for the night. We arrived at Amgui @ 4:30pm. After dinner we went to Linda and Bob Paulhus 5th wheel for a few drinks then they came down to ours. They are planning to following the same route as us and end up in Mexico this winter. An enjoyable evening, what a small world we both went to Pacific Border RV after moving out of our homes and they frequently camp at Sasquatch RV in Harrison, as we have for years. We hope to meet up with them again on the road
We are now keeping guest book handy for people that we meet on the way to sign.
