The Travelin Tooth Spring 2008 travel blog

From Evanston we descended into Park City,Utah. It was a spectacular drive through a winding canyon surrounded by walls of massive red rocks sculpted into magical towers and forms by wind and weather. The grassland was verdant and wild flowers were abundant. The train wound its way alongside us.

Suddenly the snow capped peaks of Park City appeared and as we grew closer one could see the ski runs and the olympic bobsled and ski jump structures.

We then crossed Parley's Summit and descended into the heart of Salt Lake City. It was a real test of the bus's Jake brakes and air brakes. The road was a maze of construction and traffic and we held our breath several times as we cut lanes and made instant decisions as which route to follow.

West from the city we wound our way past the great Salt Lake and the barren salt wastelands. Home of Morton Salt. We then passed Bonneville raceway and began our ascent into Nevada.

We followed the path of the many western migrants of the 1800's.The Ruby Mountains are majestic and colorful and horses abound. We spent the night at Elko,NV.

The RV park was appropriately called the Double Dice--complete with a saloon and slots.

Gorgeous location and home of the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. This is real cowboy country and nearby lies the main rote of the Pony Express. In the 1860's brave and foolhardy young men crisscroosed the vast expanse of land at a gallop with their leather mail pouches flapping aside their saddles. They would travel 1800 miles between California and Missouri in a mere 10 days!

Gorgeous views from our campsite and night temps of 45 and day of 60's Dry and the sky is blue and endless in every direction. Massive puffs of clouds populate the skies.
