Today's drive followed the coastline across the Haute-Gaspesie section, becoming very mountainous with the highway not always being able to follow the shoreline. The highest peaks of southern Quebec can be found here, sculpted by the passing of glaciers over 100,000 years ago. Today's drive was beautiful, but also "interesting" to say the least and at times we had very steep grades. The grades only lasted for short distances, so that was good. Gaspe means "end of the land" in French, thus the most easterly section of the peninsula is called Lands End. This is the location where the navigator Jacques Cartier led a voyage in 1534, claiming the country in the name of the King of France, although no settlement was established until 1608.
This area is known for its fish processing factories and fishing fleets. Our campground was right on the Bay of Gaspe and a beautiful setting.
