Sunday 9/14/08 Hopewell Rocks, NB
I awoke at 6:30 to the sound of the fog horn at the light house across the cove. After breakfast, we left St. Martins in the fog on a very rural road to Hopewell Rocks. Hopewell has the highest tides in the world. We arrived at about 1 pm, set up camp and went to see a light house and covered bridges before visiting the rocks at low tide. We will go back tomorrow for high tide for comparison pics. The tide differential between low and high tide is 39 feet for tomorrow.
Monday 9/15/08 Hopewell Rocks, NB
We awoke to rain and wind but warm (66 degrees). As we were loading up, the guy next to us just came from PEI (our next stop) and told us about some places to stay and about the lobsters. We stopped at the Rocks about 11 am; high tide is at 12:39pm. Yesterday we got pictures at low tide and we wanted to get comparison pictures at high tide. We walked down to the rocks (760 meters) at about 11:30 and took pictures until the camera battery was dead; forgot to bring the spare battery. The pictures we took are for 1 hour before high tide, but just as impressive considering that the tide differential (high to low) is 39 feet. I walked down the stair case to the water's edge and took some video as it was windy and the waves were crashing in and around the rocks; very spectacular. I don't have a firewire card for my new laptop so I can't upload video clips from the camcorder. The previous clips are from Cherie's camera. We walked back up the trail, visited the interpretive center then drove to Moncton. We did some shopping and laundry. I also filled up the truck ( $5.30/gal). there was a 38 cent increase overnight due to Ike; thank you Ike. Diesel was unchanged at $5.26; cheaper than regular! Tomorrow we plan to go to Prince Edward Island (PEI) for a few days. The weather is forecasted to be clear and in the mid 60s for the next week.
