Brushkana River, beautiful & swift

See the bumble bee?

Today we took a drive on the all-gravel Denali Highway. It was a beautiful drive, even if Mickey was a little frustrated with the 30-35 miles an hour we had to drive. It took us east from Cantwell toward Paxson; but we only drove about 35 of the 134 miles, then heaed back to the campground.

We drove along the Nenana River most of the way with the Talkeetna Range to our south (should have been able to see Mt. McKinley, but the skies were too cloudy) and the Alaska Range to the north. I guess spring has officially arrived here, as the wildflowers are now blooming on the roadsides. We thought we might see some wildlife, since it's a less traveled road, but no such luck! The beautiful views made it worthwhile, of course. Found some good fishing spots, especially the Brushkana River where we saw fly fishermen, but an hour and a half is a long way to go! Got close enough to see the glacial covered mountains that feed the Nenana, West Fork and Susitna Rivers. What an awesome place Alaska is!

PS: On Monday, we went back to the little village of Denali, and Janet found a wonderful shop called Northern Originals, full of quilted and appliqued items! So now she has some projects to complete!
