We're excited to finally start our six-week road trip across the country. We left Davis late this Saturday morning.
This 43-day trip will mostly take Highway 50 east across the country, and Highway 20 west to come back.
Our first stop was just in time for a picnic lunch at Gold Bug Mine in Placerville. (To save money, we are trying to go out for meals no more than once a day -- usually dinner. We will picnic for lunch, and cereal or free hotel breakfasts in the morning.) We toured the mine shaft and stamp mill at the park. It was everyone's favorite part of the day.
On our way out, we hit a Geocache, which involved braving poison oak and mosquitoes. While on our hike up the hill, our youngest, Brock, 9, complained about the steep grade. Mom, who has a cold, said, "Hey, I'm sick and I'm doing it." To that, Brock replied, "But you have more horsepower!"
Our next stop was at the South Lake Tahoe beach near Stateline, Nev. Scott and Wendy took a short walk while Evan and Brock built a sand castle.
After some frosty cones, we headed through the high desert to Fallon, Nev. We had hoped to camp at Lahontan Reservoir State Park, but it was super windy, with threatening thunderstorms. We drove on into town and had dinner at Round Table because the boys were starving.
After checking several motel prices, we found Americas Best Value Inn to indeed have the best value, albeit the worst punctuation.
