(Ron Writing) We had very heavy rain during the night but by morning it was back to a light intermittent drizzle. We intended to drive north to the upper end of St Mary’s Bay and then south to Cape St. Mary’s Ecological reserve but it was so foggy and rainy that we decided to skip that and keep heading north on Hwy 90 to Trans Canada Highway (TCH). Back on TCH we headed northwest and made it to Gander by late afternoon. We’re parked at the Wal*Mart in Gander for the night.
We stopped at that same vegetable stand on TCH where we stopped last Sunday on our way to St. John’s. Today we bought wild blueberries, wild raspberries, bakeapple jam, carrots, and turnip greens. Bakeapples are a popular item in Newfoundland. They have nothing to do with apples or baking but are rather a small berry that grows wild on the island. We haven’t tasted them yet but we’re told they are rather tart. We have tasted the raspberries and blueberries and both are excellent. Both berries are smaller and have a great flavor compared to ones grown commercially.
The carrots we bought are locally grown. We were surprised to see that Costco and the supermarkets in Newfoundland often sell carrots that are grown in California. You’d think they could find carrots grown a little closer to this area and save the expense of shipping them so far. After tasting the carrots we purchased, we now understand. The California carrots have a better flavor, in our opinion, even if it's commercially grown.
