We got an early start, after I cooked eggs and bacon for breakfast! Don't fall for those stories Freddy tells about me not cooking. The Falls are fabulous, with 75,000 gallons of water going over the falls each second plunging over 170 feet to the rocks below. I even got Freddy on the "Maid of the Mist", a boat getting a closer look at the falls. You have to wear rain ponchos because it is so wet, and the closer to the falls, the rougher it gets.
In 1901 a lady went over the Falls in a oak barrel she had designed herself to celebrate her 63 birthday and she lived to tell about it! In 1960 a ten year old boy went over the Falls in just a bathing suit and live jacket after his family was in a boating accident in the river above the falls. One of the "Maid of the Mist" boats rescued him. Sixteen people have gone over the falls with 9 surviving. All have gone over Horseshoe Falls. The rapids above the American Falls are rated a number 6. Five is normally the highest rating for rapids.
