Dinner with Harriet and the Hecnars

Water Lillies near Windsor

Ferry to Boblo Island

It's interesting to note that it's possible to travel north into the United States from Canada! Windsor is actually south of Detroit.

Windsor is another in the long list of cities we have visited which is vitally interested in making the water front into a series of parks and playgrounds for the use of it's citizens, and just generally to make the city attractive. The unfortunate part of this trip is that there was a labour conflict between the city and the outside workers that lasted from April to August. It meant that the parks weren't up to their usual standards.

We arrived just after the strike was settled, and before all the recycling and refuse was picked up. When we first drove down the residential streets, most of the residents had put out weeks of recycling, and their pickup is on the front streets. Before we knew what was going on, we wondered at the quantities. Either the recycling pick up was spaced out or Windsorites recycled everything! The reality of the strike wasn't nearly as interesting.

We had a really great visit with Harriet and her family. It's great to catch up. Also nice to meet many of Harriet's friends and neighbors. The block she lives on is peopled with friendly neighbors, who socialize, and we lucked out with comings and goings on the back patio. The real estate people will tell you its "location, location and location" when you buy, but what makes a neighborhood is "people, people and people" Harriet lucked out! (or maybe it's to have a friend, you need to be a friend)

Next day we toured Windsor and the surrounding area. Beautiful! We had intended to take the little ferry that's pictured across to Boblo island for lunch, but the restaurant the other side was closed, so we only watched it come and go. Too bad. It would have been nice to be on a small ferry for the contrast with some of the ones we've been on in the last while.

It makes a real difference to have friends and relatives in places you visit, since they can and usually do know all the spots that are worth visiting. Built in tour guides!

Speaking of which, Art and Dell and Janet and I got our schedules meshed, and we were able to sp[end and evening with them. Art has a favorite Hungarian restaurant in Windsor, and we had a great evening catching up, and just talking about all and sundrY.

By the way, Art, they did patrol the lot where I left the truck. The city of Windsor thinks I now owe them $15.00. I might even pay it, but I will complain that there are no signs indicating that it is a pay lot, and with others parked in it in front of the pay station, I didn't even know that I needed to cough up money.

On to London for a couple of days with Gil and Sandy.
