August 22 – Saturday

It’s hard to believe we’ve been gone only 3 weeks and have travelled 6400 kms with the truck, 5800 kms pulling the 5th wheel. Modern technology sure is great to be able to keep in touch with family & friends across the miles with Skype, texting, emails, cell phones etc.!! IAnd it sure is great travelling with a group of friends. We certainly have seen a variety of landscapes and have truly enjoyed seeing this great country of ours. And of course looking forward to much more in the Maritimes (after hurricane Bill passes by).

Today we travelled from Gananoque to Morrisburg, Ontario to take in a visit to Upper Canada Village. This truly is a “must-see” attraction with over 40 heritage buildings to explore and get a taste of what life was like in the 1860’s. Costumed interpreters performed domestic, agricultural and commercial chores typical of the period throughout the village. And they were all eager to share the stories of the past with us – we even got to eat fresh beans & carrots from the garden and buy a fresh, warm loaf of bread baked in the stone oven in the bakery. Of course they used the flour freshly ground from the steam-powered flour mill just down the street. As we strolled through the village, which today was demonstrating how the rites of death were observed with a wake in the Physician’s house, we were able to visit the tinsmith, the dressmaker’s house, the barns and the farm houses with their amazing furniture and decorating. It truly was worth seeing.

Our journey then took us north to Ottawa where we are camping for 2 nights in nearby Nepean. The large farms and fields of corn in this area are great to see. Tomorrow we plan on doing some site seeing in our countries capital.
