Sunday 9/06 Moe and I get coffee and gas at the same shop we hit a few weeks ago northbound. Then we head south down the Haines Highway – and what a road it was. This was the most magnificent road on the trip to date. First, it starts out as brand new asphalt for 20 miles, then 20 miles of just fixed last year asphalt. Wow, that was great, no construction or gravel. Next we hit the Haines Summit at 3,400 feet and the view was awesome. The geological feature that shaped this area is called ‘slump’ and it works its way up the mountain. Very different look to the land.

Then we started down into the glacial area – miles of peaks right next to us with ice spilling off their tops. So close the individual trees stood out. Just the most stunning vista I’ve ever seen. The camera just can’t capture it. Last we descended 2,000 feet entered a pine forest and went through the US customs and rode another 20 miles to the sea. The smell of the trees was everywhere!

We didn’t see any bald eagles or bears here – this is the largest bald eagle preserve in the world. I guess they were at work. Moe and I checked into our B&B, then toured the town ending at ‘Fogcutters’, a bar on main street. Here we met Dan and his wife [Harley riders] and Sue, a local artist. We spent the evening with them and even managed to have a few too many. Great time!

Tomorrow is ride to the ferry dock and board the boat for Skagway.
