Today's "color" photo from downtown Quebec.

(Ron Writing) Several years ago before we retired we used some accumulated airline miles to fly to northern New York state and then toured the Niagara Falls, Montreal, and Quebec City area with a rental car. Today we revisited the oldest park of Quebec in and around the Citadelle and the walled city.

We first stopped at the visitor center just west of the Citadelle, found a parking spot at that location, and spent the rest of the day walking around and just enjoying the sights, sounds, and beautiful fall weather. The photos will give you a little idea of what this place is like if you’ve never been here.

Quebec City is a large modern city but the old part of the city is less than one square mile and has a 401 year history dating back to its founding by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. It is the only walled city remaining in North America north of Mexico. It’s build on a very strategic hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River. It has many very narrow, and steep. I don’t thing there are two parallel streets or perpendicular intersections in area! We did a great deal of walking and much of it was vertical! Great “hike”.

We were lucky to have a sunny day with little wind. It was cool though with temperatures in the high 50’s and low 60’s. It was only 37° early this morning and as we drove back into the Quebec City we both agreed that the fall color is about at its peak in this area. Must be time to head further south!
