Exmouth is roughly 200 km north of Coral Bay and the Ningaloo Reef actually begins just north of Exmouth. This was our next stop. We stayed in a caravan park very near to the Cape Range National Park which includes the Ningaloo Reef, on the west coast of this peninsula.
We found the water here was much warmer, beautiful beaches and wonderful snorkelling. Some of the beaches can be quite dangerous with unpredictable currents, but Turquoise Bay (yes it was turquoise) was quite safe for snorkelling. It was lovely to see the different corals and fish of every colour and size and also one turtle!
We took a boat ride up Yardie Creek which runs through a gorge in the National Park, and saw rock wallabies, birds and shoals of fish in the clear water. There are also a number of walks through this Park but really the beaches are the main attraction here. From the lighthouse lookout at the tip of the peninsula we also saw the humpback whales travelling south on their annual migration.
It was very hard to leave the Cape Range National Park. We would definitely like to return one day.
Our next stop will be Carnarvon 350km south.
