Rachel's post 30 escape 2009 travel blog

I think it now goes without saying that there was a lie in involved to start the day. It does make a nice change from all those ridiculously early starts on my camping trips!

Although definitely cooler now, the sun was shining and so I started with a wander back through the main business/shopping district which was quite bustling area. I navigated myself successfully past the shops and arrived at the Musee des Beaux Arts where I began my visit with lunch! The gallery was split into two parts on either side of road so the cafe side was first stop. They had a nice collection of Impressionist paintings, plus an interesting exhibition on all things Napoleon. But the best part was in the other building, where there was the final few days of the "Expanding Horizons - painting and photography of American and Canadian landscapes 1860-1915". The title sounded great but when I actually walked round it became even better because (call it fate?) there were so many pieces of art of places that I'd been visiting over the last few months that it just all became an incredibly personal exhibition - like my trip had been documented in famous art! Although it was fairly busy, presumably as it was closing, I spent a long time wandering about and although ridiculously heavy and not exactly cheap, had to buy a copy of the exhibition book. I was so glad I'd gone.

Small aside, this was the first gallery where I'd seen a board with the names/brand of the paint they'd used - Dulux (or Farrow &Ball more likely) should get onto that at the National Gallery/Tate!!
