VAN THIEL'S GRAND ADVENTURE #2 travel blog

First 3 days were in a standard hotel...but a resonable view of...

Night view of Lycabettus Hill got us excited for Athens.

Night view of the Parthenon and the Acropolis from our hotel.

Snack before tackling the National Archeological Museum.

Ancient sport of fighting pet dogs and cats...seriously.

Lydia's love of pottery is evident by the details she notices.

The museum taught us the significance of the shift from black figures...

...orange figures on black background. It is more technical that it seems...

Something for Lydia's memories.

A little longer beard and you would not see the difference.

Simon has had enough marble statues...poor kid, he does not know what...

We got to move to our apartment, this is the way we...

Team Awesome against Team Better in a round of Pictionary.

Yes, we do like renting apartments, we don't know why people stay...

Yes, apartments are good.

It is being part of a residential area that is the best....

The lead up to Athens -We all looked forward to Athens as it is the center and symbol of so many myths. -We were discouraged by many who told us that Athens is "just a city". -We were discouraged by Greeks who said that 1-2 days is enough, see the Acropolis and get out. -We were discouraged by the Athenean on Naxos who said "Athens is Hell, just Hell."

Well...Athens is just a city...yes...but... ...a city with the Acropolis, a city with Museums of pottery, Archeology, War, Maritime exploits and Musical instruments. Athens is just a city with international art shows and theater. Athens is just a city with its own individual sense, a personality. Athens may not be one of the "Great Cities", it will not often be listed in a sentence with New York, London nor Paris but it is a place to see, a place to spend time, a place that we can easily spend 13 days in and not come close to exploring it all..simply because there is so much here to see. Lucky for us the negative things said about Athens only affected our attitude towards the city for the first day...after that we saw Athens for what it is, a fine city with much to offer those who look for things....and I can write this with a smile for it is 23:30 and the boys just got to bed, for we were out at a free public street performance...fire, juggling, acrobatics, more fire, stilts, more fire...you don't get that sort of thing anywhere except these big cities.
