A little stray bound for a good home

Yesterdays drive was another of those easy drives, only a 212 miles into Las Vegas. We crossed over Hoover Dam and before we could cross we had to be inspected. A complete search and walk through of the motorhome by Homeland Security. Nice and polite but they don't take chances with any big rigs crossing over the Dam. We arrived at Thousand Trails and settled in for the next couple of weeks. The weather is warm and will be getting warmer, mid 80's today and headed into the 90's later in the week. We will be using the pool for sure.

Last night we heard the soft little meows of a kitten somewhere outside. Mike looked around and spotted a 5-6 week stray under the motorhome next door. The kitten disappeared under the motorhome but continued to meow a bit louder. Mike talked with the owner of rig and proceeded to crawl around under the motorhome for almost two hours before finally locating the kitten. It wasn't real happy when placed in one of our traveling cages. We put a small bowl of food in there while we located a shelter in Las Vegas. The poor thing was starved and finished off the food in an instant.

Mike located a no-kill shelter, the Nevada SPCA, and we contacted them and they were willing to take the kitten. We took the little one over and after dropping him off, we took a tour. What a place. They have over 800 cats, not to mention the dogs, rabbits, ferrets and numerous other types of strays. There are about 75-100 cats in each of the large rooms. They all have beds, towers or cubby holes to sleep in. They all looked very comfortable. They have lots of volunteers playing with cats all over the place. It is nice to see a place that cares for stray or abandoned animals in this fashion. They operate on donations alone, no funding from the government, so if you ever feel like donating to an organization that helps animals here is their address: Nevada SPCA 4800 W Dewey Dr. Las Vegas, NV 89118

Our kids, Tina and Sean, were shocked when we told them we found a stray kitten and didn't keep him. We have gotten the nickname "suckers" from them because of our ability to attract stray animals and giving them homes. Life is never dull in our travels.
