Rented a little Fiat, boy does that bring back memories, as I owned three different models during my younger days (note that I DID NOT say WHEN I WAS young !),and drove into the countryside outside of Ostuni, where we have the apartment. Alberobello is world famous for the trulli (that is plural - trullo is singular). We're told legend has it that this mode of construction (without any mortar) allowed a whole village to be dismantled quickly if the regional 'authorities' arrived to ensure that the peasants had not built houses which they were forbidden to do so. More recently the lower sections of the trulli are stuccoed & whitewashed, though the roofs are still just stacked limestone shingles. Had a great lunch while in town; rolled stuffed (smoked hard cheese) veal w/ a ragu' sauce, grilled stuffed(hard peccorino)eggplant, and a saffron fusilli w/ pork neck meat. Also stopped to chat with six older gentlemen sitting in a sunny park overlooking the valley stretched out below. One of them spoke some english as he'd lived in England while in the army in the 50's. Unfortunately, one of the other 'lads' kept interrupting him every time he tried to use his rusty english skills. I caught comments about Mussolini, but to what point ? Mystery to me. We arranged one extra day in Ostuni, as we've arranged a day early arrival at the Rome apartment. So, train from Ostuni to Rome via Bari on Saturday morning
Will add entry for Ostuni from Rome.
Ciao for now
