We woke up Wednesday morning to 4" of snow and 20 degrees with a cold blowing wind. We debated about whether to leave or not, but by 9:00 a.m. we were about the only ones left in the RV park and trucks were going by on the highway, so decided to try it. We were at 6600 ft elevation, so were hoping the snow would diminish as we got into the valleys. And that is exactly what happened. Twenty miles down the mountain we left the snow behind and by the time we reached the Great Basin area, the sun was out and temps started rising. We drove south through the eastern side of Nevada, which is a lot like driving on a moonscape. Vast amounts of nothingness sandwiched between mountains. There were times you could see the road straight ahead for miles and miles and miles. It was awesome in its vastness.
The only problem we had, besides the snow covered roads at the start of the day, was as we were going through a series of curves through a canyon in what is called the White River Narrows, one of our bins popped open and our slide-out tray slid out and dumped some of our "stuff" out. We heard a "thump" but didn't know what it was and kept on driving. A mile down the road we heard another "thump" and then a car pulled in front of us and pointed at our right hand side. It is never a good thing when someone rolls down their window and points at your rig. We immediately pulled over and discovered our bin was open and more stuff had fallen out. We picked up what we could find and unhooked the truck so Ed could drive back and see what else we had lost. He found several pairs of his shoes that he keeps in this bin, and miscellaneous "stuff". We think we got it all (except for one shoe from Ed's favorite bike riding shoes) and the only real damage was our basement TV may be broken, and, of course, there's now the problem with the broken sliding bin. Did I mention as Ed was backing the RV into a more safe offroad pullout so we could assess the damage to the bin, he backed over a metal reflecter post, pulling it out of the ground and dragging it under the motorhome where it got stuck and only came out after Ed got his "persuader pipe" and crawled under the RV in the dusty, windy, dirty gravel and whacked on it several times. It was an interesting day and by the time we stopped at Sams Club Casino RV Park in Las Vegas, we had TWO cocktails! By the way, by the time we stopped in Las Vegas, our truck and motorhome were the dirtest we have ever seen them. The truck is so dirty, you can't see out the windows and there is gravel stuck on the body! Our next "trip" out is to find a car wash.
We are now safe and secure in Las Vegas and will spend another night here so we can visit the Strip and/or downtown and probably earn our trip at the slot machines. Can you do that by betting $20? At any rate, the sun is shining, the temps are warming, we are safe, and life is good. Hope life is good for all of you, too.
