I would have loved to have a few extra days to explore the surrounding area of Athens, BUT since we did not do the isles I know we will be back anyway. Our first day we arrived we simply walked around the Plaka area as we did not want to see too much as Eric, Our friend from London, was to arrive later in the evening and we would see all the sights together the following couple of days.
Our second day we went to the Acropolis, the National Gardens, The Ancient Agora and area. There was a lot of walking and by 5 we were ready to go back to the hostel to relax for a bit. We had a few drinks and then headed out to a local restaurant recommended byt the owner of the hostel and It was SOOOOOOO good. I ordered a Gyro, and it came with fries INSIDE the sandwich, which was a pleasant surprise:) It was amazing to see the Parthenon but I was disappointed cause there was SO much restoration everywhere - but I assume it is like that all the time.
Anyhoots, our second day we met up with a friend of Mike's who he went to High school with. He brought us to the coast, so we were able to see some Local beaches in Athens. Unfortunately it was the coldest day in Athens in years ( according to locals) so we did not get to take advantage of it. Just our Luck!!! After the Coast we headed to the New Acropolis Museum, which was interesting but small as apparently the british stole a lot of the artifacts dureng the wars and they are in British museums. After dinner we went to a nice rooftop garden that overlooked Athens. Which is absolutely beautiful at night as the Acropolis is all lit up.
After 7 weeks in Europe I am tired but also sad to go, there are so many places I still want to see. However, it will be nice to leave the Euro for currencies that are a bit more favorable for our bank account. 40 days left until we arrive in Perth, Austarlia, so we are only about half way there. Off to warmer weather......:)
