Nevada: October 30 – November 1
We didn’t spend much time in Nevada as we were anxious to get to the Canyons. In fact, there wasn’t much to offer us given that the highway (I- 80) crosses through mostly dessert-like terrain, spotted with either casinos or prison/correction facilities (I wonder if there is a correlation between the two). Casinos are present at every truck stop, gas station, town or every few miles.
It is, however, a beautiful state from what we saw: we remember the bright sun shining on the desert and accenting the odd hill/mountain and valley with lots of wide open spaces. The roads were great and for the most part straight, allowing for cruise control and the odd nap (just kidding about the nap).
Campgrounds were scarce; however every casino allows overnight parking for recreational vehicles. We were lucky enough to find an RV park connected with the Grand Sierra Resort, one of the nicer facilities on the outskirts of Reno. The parking was reasonable and the facility was well-kept and connected with the hotel. Of course the hotel housed a very large casino (its OK we still own the van and didn’t even put a quarter in the machines). As the next day was Halloween, the hotel was running a Vampire competition which we found quite amusing as we walked the hall inspecting the costumes. We decided to spend Halloween night there as well to avoid any pranksters that may lurk in a less private campground. In reality, we wanted to see the staff in their costumes that night.
Sunday morning at the break of day (plus a few hours and a time change) and we were off to Utah, the Salt Flats and the Canyons, so come on down…
