The beginning of my journey into the outback and on the way to Broken Hill there was a dust storm brewing, not a bad one but one nevertheless and I'm nearing my first destination and there's one of the more bizarre moments of my time down under, out of the storm there's a truck hauling a yacht - god only knows what it was doing here! Thankfully, or unfortunately there's weren't any other similar moments on the way. ... Broken Hill is a big dusty town which owes its existence to the world's largest deposits of copper, zinc and silver which are still being mined in the surrounding areas, and has as a backdrop a huge silver skimp hill which is a result of the silver mining from a site on the edge of town. ... A day to look at as many interesting sites of Broken Hill. ... We then went in the car to another information centre up high above an old 'open cut', which had a good view looking back down over Broken Hill. ... We then decided to squeeze a bit more of something in, and we found White's museum, which was all about the mining industry of Broken Hill, which included: a DVD on the story of the history of Broken Hill, artwork with the use of the minerals, walk through area of a pretend underground mine, and lots of examples of what came out of the mines - it was very interesting. ...

We left Mildura and the Murray river this morning, and travelled along the Silver City highway to Broken Hill. ... The towns and locations that we travelled through were: Coomealla, Wentworth, and Coombah, before reaching Broken Hill. ... There was probably an area approx 10km of green grassy land along the verge where the goats were grazing, 145kms south of Broken Hill, and no farmers or sign of any responsible caretakers within cooee, and at least 30 goats in all. ... They were happy looking and very fat goats and not too close to the road, so looked like they had some road sense too! We learnt something new today too, that is that Broken Hill goes by SA time even though it is a NSW town, you would expect that it has the same time as Mildura, but no, we had to turn our clocks back to SA time! How about that? The weather is fine, if you are wondering, 18 degrees (during the day), and Rob has been wearing his t-shirt, shorts and thongs since we left Echuca, even though it wasn't that warm yet. ...

(Greg from Newcastle was holidaying in Broken Hill for a couple of weeks. ... I'm travelling through alot of Australia by train, I leave Sydney on the Indian Pacific in the direction of Adelaide, I could get to Perth on this train, if I wanted to be on it for 3 1/2 days that is! I really am not the biggest fan of trains and a day and a half is enough for the first leg, the train pulls into the outback town of Broken Hill. ... Broken Hill is a mining town and apart from the few tourist places there isn't much else. ... 13th March - Despite getting up early we didn't get away from the campsite till 10am and finally arrived in Broken Hill approximately 545kms later at 5. ... Little traffic, stunning views and sky that seemed to go on forever! By the time we were set up (had to pitch the tent twice as they gave us the wrong site initially!) there was really only time for shopping, dinner and thoughts about our next few days and what we wanted to see (Paolo and Iain have found a golf course!) including Silverton (movie set and ghost town!), opal mines (one of these we hope to stay overnight!), Mad Max movie country and stunning artwork and sculptures (of which there are loads in and around Broken Hill) 14t March - After breakfast we headed to Silverton. ... 25kms out of Broken Hill, Silverton is a tiny town with one bitumen road through the centre and dirt tracks leading to houses dotted around, art galleries and the famous Silverton Hotel. ... Not sure our pictures will do it justice, but we tried! Headed back to Broken Hill, officially a city with a population of 20,000! The city grew up around a mine when in the 1880's the largest and richest source of silver, lead and zinc was found in a continous arch 7. ... Indeed, the massive BHP mining concern (check their share price) started here as the Broken Hill Proprietry mining company. ...
