Sep 12, 2008 - Day01 Departure
So what’s this all about then? Study tour (not to mention a holiday) for Keren and her 3 baggage handlers. Keren: The mission: Part 1 -To investigate patient involvement in health care in the UK, how this has impacted on patient safety and quality, and to learn any lessons for Ballarat as a recipient of one of the Doreen Bauer Scholarships for 2008. ... Arriving 4 hours before the flight because of the Ballarat Shuttlebus timetable meant that we had lots of time to explore the tax-free haven. ... Perhaps there was no other recreational options available but I begin to wonder if I need to find something constructive to do while I sit, without frustration, while shops are explored.So what’s this all about then? We spent the night in Port Campbell and instead of driving back to Melbourne via the coast we headed inland via the town of Ballarat where we spent another night. ... Gold was discovered in Ballarat in the 1850's which sparked a gold rush attracting tens of thousands of people from all over the world to the area to try and make their fortune. ... We also visited Ballarat's main attraction "Sovereign Hill" which is a re-created living history museum of a gold mining town from the 1850's complete with actors in period dress to add to its authenticity. ... We also saw them pouring a $200,000 gold bar which Vic got to hold after it had cooled down but unfortunately the man prised it back off her! Back at our hostel we spent the evening talking to an Australian and an English girl who were both staying in Ballarat long term. ...

It was a short drive to Ballarat so we decided to stop in Bendigo along the way. ... From here we continued to Ballaratt and went to Sovereign Hill which is basically a theme park built around the Ballaratt gold rush. ... 11/6/07 1123 Km Start Local driving only We spent today touring, taking in Sovereign Hill Historic Village and the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. ... Ballarat developed during the 1850's after the discovery of gold and Sovereign Hill is significant in Australian history as it was the site of an uprising by the gold miners against the treatment they were given by the police and Australian authorities. ... The gold rush in Ballarat began approximately 20 after gold was discovered in the Dahlonega area and about four years after the California discovery. ... Following our visit to Sovereign Hill we stopped at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens which has some outstanding specimen trees from around the world as well as native to Australia. ...
