Mar 18th 2009 Melbourne This AM the Smiths picked us up after breakfast and we set off on a car tour of Melbourn with them both pointing out places of interest including some of the old English style university buildings and the Anglican and Presbyterian cathedrals. ... Melbourne was founded in 1835 and quickly established itself as an important center. ... 5 on the Richter scale!!! We were glad we weren’t on the tallest building rooftop when it occurred!!! We met Dorothy and Durham as their guests at the charming old Melbourne Club and after a brief tour went into the beautiful courtyard for a cocktail under an enormous English Plain Tree – very peaceful and hard to believe we were in the center of town!! We enjoyed a delicious dinner starting with smoked salmon, delicious rack of Australian lamb and Stilton wheel for dessert and a very nice Western Australian Shiraz. ...

March19th Melbourne The Smiths took us today to the Yarra Valley wine area- a lovely drive but as we got close to our destination we started to notice the effects of the terrible fires that swept the Victoria area! Fortunately the vineyard we visited had only 5 acres damaged but signs of fire were very close!! . ...
