Nov 11, 2009 - Rhodes and Kos, Greece

Rhodes Town is a charming medieval walled city, overlooking a scenic port, We stayed in a 500 year old building in the heart of the old walled city, catered to by the enthusiastic Italian couple who own the B&B, one of the few places still open. ... John in the 1400s, but thoroughly - and a bit insensitively - restored to serve as Mussolini's summer home, and the archeological museum, formerly the medieval hospital, provided insight into Rhodes in its heyday. ... Our original plan was to visit sights outside of Rhodes Town, but we were a bit weary of a "sorry but we're closed" Greece and were eager to move on to Turkey. ... There are boats from Rhodes to Kos, Greece and from Kos to Turkey but none from Rhodes to Turkey so we took a ferry from Rhodes to Kos, spent a couple of days exploring that cute city then whiled away an hour in the sunshine on a boat to Bodrum, Turkey. ... Kos is the site of numerous architectural ruins, the most interesting being the Knight's Castle, an amazingly well-preserved medieval castle that, like the one in Rhodes, was built by the Knights of the Order of St. ...

Oct 9, 2009 - Mamma Mia!

Along with all the other pedestrian Aegean mariners we had been directed to the main car deck in the bowels of the ship and were awaiting our escape; lined up in battle formation before being released onto the local population. The city of Rhodes is the largest town on Rhodes, It has played host to nearly all Mediterranean powers both ancient and modern in its very, very long history. ... I should have said ‘Down near The Colossus of Rhodes’ but didn’t have the guts; some of these guys may well have believed that the 32 metre high copper statue that straddled the ancient harbour and was one of the seven wonders of the world still existed. ... Thankfully, the liners pulled out by dusk laden with their happy punters sipping Pina Colladas as they ticked off another day of travel and cultural experience.Along with all the other pedestrian Aegean mariners we had been directed to the main car deck in the bowels of the ship and were awaiting our escape; lined up in battle formation before being released onto the local population. Jul 25, 2009 - Rhodes and the Old City

Saying sad farewell to Turkey, and promising myself I would be back really soon, I boarded the fast ferry to Rhodes. No late nights in the Old City for me! Exploring the Old City in Rhodes Town was amazing (to borrow the Yanks' favourite word!), a lot of really beautiful medieval style buildings, and the encircling wall from the old fortress still intact, circumnavigating an area of approximately 3 kilometres. ... The streets of the Old Town are largely paved with smooth river stones, but laid on their thin, not flat side, so it must have been a long and frustrating task! I can't begin to imagine how many stones were used, but it must number in the millions, surely.Saying sad farewell to Turkey, and promising myself I would be back really soon, I boarded the fast ferry to Rhodes. Sep 3, 2008 - Rhodes Greece

We departed in a cloud of black smoke, equivalent to the tyre production of Goodyear being burnt so if we sank they would only have to follow our trail to its end. Another nice run between the mainland of Turkey toward Rhodes, where we were to meet up with a technician flying in from Athens to check why we were smoking so badly. ... heheheheheee Anyway, with the afternoon light starting to fail, Stephan and i decided it was time to take the cameras around for a tour of the old town and walls, so we could say we had been to Rhodes. ...
