... Hello everybody, As you can see we're in Hampi,Karnatika. ...

1-19 Left 9:30 for Hospit. Needless to say, this was one hair raising ride and our closest to collision yet, just inches before he swerved back into our lane, a truely exciting time was had by all, HA! Arriving in Hospit around 6 we realized it was not where we wanted to stay for the night plus we wanted to find a reasonable ON where there might be cable TV for tomor inauguration! We took tuk tuk to Hampi(on the way we passed another 9 bullock carts, they are really 'the thing' in this area) and Laxmi Hotel (after Bon investigated 3 other places w/ our tuk tuk driver's 'assistance') is where we ended up for 700 r. ... In the afternoon we walked the Hampi Bazaar area, gave Lakshmi(Virupaksha temple elephant) a 1 r. ... coin and received her blessing, and toured the ruins of the area including Hemakuta Hill.1-19 Left 9:30 for Hospit. Other traveler's talk a lot about then temples of Hampi and its landscape of precariously balanced giant granite boulders. ... Feb 22, 2008 - Hampi Childrens Trust

As mentioned in my previous blog – I went to visit the children of Harmony House, which is run by The Hampi Children’s Trust – and I was truly moved and charmed by these children, they are street children who if they did not have the support of HCT would have no chance of schooling. ... Like all Indian children they love to have their photos taken so the camera was a huge hit! On my second visit Celia who works there full time was telling me they were having their 1st birthday party for one of the little girls, most of these kids don’t understand what a birthday is, in some cases they have had to make up a date with the little information they have…makes me sad just typing that fact…! Rather than try to explain what HCT do I have retyped the flyer they give out to visitors – PLEASE read it, and if you can help please do! I intend to do some fund raising when I get home – so be warned you will all be getting harassed in some shape or form! The Hampi Children’s Trust (HCT) is a non-profit making Public Charitable Trust, based in the ancient historic town of Hampi, the fabled capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, in the state of Karnataka, India. ... The aim of the Trust is to promote + improve the educational prospects of those young children (aged 4 to 16 years) living in Hampi Bazaar who currently do not receive an education, primarily because their parent do not allow them to attend school, preferring instead to send them out begging for money from the many Westerners who visit the magnificent Hampi site during the tourist season. ... The HCT’s initial aims are modest, with the first project (funded by Tim Brown, of Stafford, and & Kali Das, of Hampi itself)_ beginning in May 2007. ... We are employing a cook and buying food ingredients, in order to provide an initial group0 of 10 children with 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, providing school uniforms and essential materials, and enrolling them at a small private school at the far end of Hampi Bazaar main street. ...

Feb 21, 2008 - Heavenly Hampi

I've been in Hampi for 4 days, but it seems so much longer I have had such a wonderful time, with so many happy memories to leave with. ... Hampi Day 1 On arriving in Hampi I never for a moment thought I would feel like this, Hampi is full of extremes, extreme beauty, extreme poverty and extreme smells (not of a good type!) It has the obligatory cattle and chickens roaming the street and lots of children begging for pens / chocolate / rupees and smack in the middle of the noise and the chaos is the most amazing temple with alls its beauty, heritage and splendour. ... Having met my lovely neighbours I decided to stay where I was and I am so glad I did, meeting them really made Hampi special Hampi Day 2 Hampi is famous for its temples and ruins which date back to the 14th century so I set off for the day to explore - your really cant go very far without falling over a ruin or a temple, I decided to take the easier option and had a tour on a boat up the river, when I say boat its more like a basket on the water - but it was lovely, someone else did all the work and I took the pictures. ... Day 3 Hampi's mosquito's seem to have taken rather a shine to me and today I suffered badly with swollen, itchy ankles so decided to take it easy and chill out at the guest house, the others pretty much had the same idea but went off into the next town to (allegedly) get money from the ATM, they came back fully loaded with mosquito prevention & cure equipment and beer!! I think it was really the beer they went for! Hampi is extremely religious and no alcohol or meat is permitted, so it was all rather furtive on the patio drinking their beer out of coffee cups! We all sat around chatting and playing backgammon for the afternoon and again set off for the Mango tree for dinner - all very relaxing and great fun. ... Later in the afternoon Christian, the children and I went to visit the children at Harmony House, which is a charity that was set up by an English guy here in Hampi to get the street kids into school, it is a fabulous place doing fabulous work but struggle to find finance and support - I'm going to do an entry just for Harmony House in the next day or two with more info on the kids and how (if you want to)you can help them! In the evening we all climbed - and I mean climbed - up a mountain to see the sunset from one of the temples, think it was a watch tower. ...
