The 2 and a half days I was there the town appeared to be in some sort of shut down, which on each day the Italians tried to tell me was because it was a holiday of some sort, but I think they were just trying to communicate that it is summer, and all the natives of Naples get out of the city pronto, because it is so disgustingly hot! The other main reason I went to Naples was its convenient location to Pompeii, the ancient Roman city that was buried almost entirely intact when Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, piling 2m of volcanic rock and another 2m of ash on top of the city, and its inhabitants. ... Just when I thought I was getting sick of visiting ruins, Pompeii completely reinvigorated my enthusiasm, the place is simply amazing, stunning, and a little bit spooky. ... I was more worried about getting mugged on the train by a young mother trailing three children than I was in the underground Metro! but back to Pompeii. ... The lives that some of the people of Pompeii lived, with everay surface of their houses decked out in finery, with specific spaces within the home, including fountains and gardens specifically desigend so that they could relax to the sound of running water and admist nature while still within a city, is a bit mind boggling. ... There is also a creepy side to Pompeii however, as the volcano erupted unexpectedly, many of the people of Pompeii didn´t have time to escape. ...

Jul 23, 2009 - Pompeii & back to Rome
After sitting at the station waiting for a bus , we realised that Pompeii was a very short waslk away! It was good to dump our luggage and join an English speaking tourguide to talk us through the ruins. ... Vesuvias is about 12 km from Pompeii & is now about 3000 ft high, but was over 5000 ft at the time of the eruption. ... Saturday Novemver 8th So after leaving Vatican City we are off to Pompeii. ... When we get to Pompeii the weather is amazing but we come out of the train station and really don't know where to go so a cab driver takes us up to the ruins and we do the audio guide tour and walk around. ... We had an early start today. Pompeii was amazing, totally fascinating place and probably the highlight of our Italian leg. ...
