As we were pulling away he even stopped us to suggest a short cut to the road to Ravenna. ... Ravenna has an amazing collection of Byzantine mosaics from the time when the Emperors Theoderic (Roman) and Justinian (Byzantine) had their capital there in the sixth century. ... Ravenna is an extremely attractive and up market town with wide streets, imposing buildings of all periods (it was bombed heavily during the war) and packed full of churches, palazzos and beautiful shops. ...

Nov 12, 2004 - Day Trip to Ravenna
Early Friday morning, we all hopped on a bus for our first trip in Florence to the city of Ravenna (about a three hour bus ride away). ... Considering I had definitely started to settle in to my apartment a bit too much, I am definitely glad that the program got us up and going- as much as I love Florence, I know I need to explore Italy while I'm here! Ravenna was definitely a huge switch from anything we saw while in France. ... The mosaics were absolutely beautiful- just trying to imagine the patience it would take to lay out thousands of tiny pieces of glass so carefully bowls me over! The craziest part is that some of the mosaics we saw were almost 1000 years old- this stuff lasts! Ravenna actually used to be the capital of the Holy Roman Empire (fun fact for the day!). ...

I caught a train out of Venice on Saturday when it started to rain and the flooding began. Ravenna was a nice small college town with thousands of 20 somethings crowding the streets. ...
