The remote Milford Sound. ... Thursday 29th October 2009 So, we are off to Milford Sound – but not too early! We are on the road by 10. ... 00 am and no sooner do we leave the last of the town than we see a poor tourist being pulled over by the local polis for speeding – That’s a bummer!! Still we pass at a safe and legal speed –and yes, we do observe the limits – well, OK – some times it’s a little over!! The Milford Road is a very scenic journey with many possible photos opportunities – and we stop a little more often than the coaches do, but still make good time in getting to Milford. The remote Milford Sound. ... The drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown surely has to qualify as one of the world's great drives and despite the terrible weather (low grey clouds and drizzle) this would be a trip I wouldn't forget (more on that later). ... The road twisted and turned as I approached Milford Sound and its mountain passes, and despite the weather I stopped just short of the tunnel to size up a photo. ... Whilst framing the shot I noticed some snow suddenly appear in the frame and I turned to my left to see snow falling off the top if the ridge, yes an avalanche had started. The drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown surely has to qualify as one of the world's great drives and despite the terrible weather (low grey clouds and drizzle) this would be a trip I wouldn't forget (more on that later). ... Grand Day Out

Feb 12, 2009 - Overnight On Milford Sound - Just Awesome!!

WE WILL HOPEFULLY PUT IN A COUPLE OF PHOTOS LATER. What an awesome overnight trip out on to Milford Sound - just perfect conditions to see Mitre Peak, the opportunity to kayak out on Harrisons Inlet and John even jumped in for a very brief swim (for which read 10 seconds!) Last time we went to Milford it had been raining heavily and the sheer fiord sides were dancing with hundreds of waterfalls. ... This time we were able to appreciate the scale of the fiord sides (the cluoud was too low before) in places rising vertically 1000m (and a further 1000m below the waterline as well ! - There were still the permanent waterfalls to appreciate - Bowen Falls, the 500m high Stirling Falls (3 times the height of Niagara)and the more delicate Bridal Veil Falls.WE WILL HOPEFULLY PUT IN A COUPLE OF PHOTOS LATER. Feb 3, 2009 - Fiordland and the Big Fish

“What is a fiord?” we pondered as we pulled out of Wanaka heading to Te Anau. PB sandwich time! It’s also the first time we’ve been cold and the long underwear and fleeces have come out! This morning we did a two hour “cruise” in the Milford Sound. ... We found out what a fiord is – it’s when the glacier cuts through mountain to get to the ocean (don’t look it up because I might not have that quite right).“What is a fiord?” we pondered as we pulled out of Wanaka heading to Te Anau.
